Central Florida Digs Sand DragsPosted: 8/19/2007
Feichtel dominates side by side, Foust wins and sets new record in Sand Drags, Fowler lives up to his name “El Biffo Loco” There was plenty of excitement at eXtreme Hobby Zone in Winter Haven, Florida on Saturday, August 11th. eXtreme Hobby Zone is the second home to the R/C Monster Motorsports Chase for the Championship Series and we are proud to introduce Polk County as the states second radio controlled monster truck Sand Drag Racing pit venue. Concourse kicked off the day with Gene Foust claiming 1st place with his HPI Savage Dale Jr. monster truck. Travis Graham with his Power Stroke Dodge Charger won 2nd place and 3rd place was won by Yvonne Fichtel with Pretty in Pink.
The excitement began when Tommy Feichtel top qualified in Side-by-Side Big Block competition with an untouchable run of 8.831 seconds. Tommy Feichtel advanced to win the event against fierce competition from Travis Graham with Power Stroke with a time of 8.779 seconds. Feichtel driving his Plum Crazy HPI Savage also set a new track record with a time of 8.734 seconds. Side-by-Side Small Block racing was taken up a notch when husband and wife team of Tommy and Yvonne Feichtel raced each other in the finals. Yvonne with Pretty in Pink ended up having to do the dishes that night because Tommy won with an 11.29 second run. As if the day wasn’t hot enough, Sand Drags turned up the heat in Polk County. Travis Graham was top qualifier in the Big Block class with a time of 1.376 seconds. However, things really got hot when Gene Foust set an all time R/C Monster Motorsports record time of 1.201 seconds in Sand Drag Big Block racing. It would ultimately be Foust verses Graham in the finals, Foust taking the win with 1.269 seconds to Grahams 1.507 seconds.
In Small Block Sand Drags, it would be new comer Chris Mcfalls in the finals verses eXtreme Hobby Zone owner Rich Muller. Chris took the win with a time of 1.406 seconds. Truck Pulling was on a clay surface at the eXtreme Hobby Zone shop. At 25lbs Gene Foust with Team Magic and Tommy Feichtel with Money Pit both got full pulls which resulted in a pull-off at 30lbs. Feichtel took the win at 29’ 6” to Foust’s 29’. Craig Lowe would take first place in Small Block Truck pulling class. The day was topped off with an unbelievable freestyle performance by Brian Fowler driving El Biffo Loco. He raised the bar on everyone by jumping off the roof of the eXtreme Hobby Zone shop, not once, not twice, but three times. Travis Graham was next up and had no choice, but to raise the roof over Fowler’s performance. Not only did Graham’s truck jump off the roof, but the truck did three summersault back flips before smashing into the ground. The judges awarded Graham with the win for his fancy flying. We’d like to thank everyone for coming out and having a great time! We would also like to welcome all the new racers. You all did a phenomenal job and we’ll see you back at eXtreme Hobby Zone, Saturday, September 8th for more wild R/C Monster Truck racing. Next up we will be racing at Performance Hobby in Dunellon, Florida on August 25th. We will be having a grand opening for our third sand drag race pit. The Performance Hobby race will be the wrap up for our 2006-2007 Chase for the Championship Series. See you there!
