Surprises Galore at the 4th of July R/C Monster Truck Jam at Superior Hobbies

Posted: 7/1/2006

July 1, 2006 – Once again our event was cut short by the rain but, that did not dampen the spirits of the racers who attended the R/C Monster Motorsports event hosted by Superior Hobbies. The day began with a pre-show ceremony saluting the men and women of our military followed by a short prayer lead by Zeek Heard. Concluding the pre-show ceremony, Ken Higby of Superior Hobbies gave a short speech of encouragement and thanks to all of the racers and sponsors of the event.

The side-by-side racing course was a modified Chicago Style track. Both trucks faced head to head in the center of an oval course. When the light turned green both R/C Monster trucks launched over a set of crushed cars towards opposite corners of the track. Once the trucks made a left turn back into the oval they raced around the course for one lap to determine the winner.

We have now divided the concourse event into two separate categories: Static Display and Daily Driver.

Static display is a new way of judging the R/C Monster Trucks within our concourse event. Racers can now create diorama displays with their trucks. Engine stands, figurines, detailed engine compartments, jacks, jack stands, mirrors, lights, etc. can be included in the display.

The Daily Driver concourse competition recognizes the R/C Monster Truck enthusiasts who also put their hard work and creativity into their trucks and run them in the event competition.

JD Kelly’s Wild Thang II was the pick of the litter for the Daily Driver concourse category sporting an American Flag body. Angel Ocasio won First place with La Atrevida in the Static Display concourse category. Angel keeps raising the bar at each race in concourse. Just recently Angel had the entire engine block and spur gear chrome plated on his La Atrevida R/C Monster Truck. WOW!!!!

Larry Hutcheson, sponsored by Spectrum Powder Coating was top qualifier in the Small Block class and also took home first place with his Devastation R/C Monster truck in the Small Block racing category. Mike Herndon of Team Syndicate surprised us all with the racing depute of Chris Barnette’s War Machine. Mike drove the War Machine all the way to the finals in the Small Block class. Great job to Mike! We look forward to seeing more of Mike on the racing circuit.

Top qualifier for the Big Block class was Zeek Heard with his Losi LST Gravedigger with a time of 15.73. Justin Heard took first place with Bari Musawwir’s Monster Mutt and also set a track record of 14.61 seconds. Team Heard had all of the Wolf Pack Team trucks in the finals. Ryan Church deputed his CEN sponsored Nemesis team truck advancing into the second round. This was Ryan’s first race with his newly sponsored CEN R/C Monster truck and we wish him luck at our future races.

Steve Tash with his Byron Fuels sponsored Ford Thunder Truck continued to amaze us with his pulling style winning the Big Block pulling competition with a another full pull. Steve Tash is still the current record holder in Big Block pulling on carpet with a full pull of 90 lbs. Steve Tash is also the undefeated R/C Monster Truck Tug-of-War champion! Gene Foust was hot on Steve’s wheels with his HPI Savage M&M’s R/C Monster truck. The M&M’s truck succumbed to clutch problems giving Gene second place. The rain came and unfortunately we were unable to hold the Small Block pulling competition.

We concluded the race with a racer raffle sponsored by Superior Hobbies. Jesus Hernandez of Discount Hobby Inc. of Miami donated 6 gallons of 30% Toro Fuel, Glow plug Igniters and wrenches. JAC Racing Fuels donated 4 gallons of 30% nitro and 6 quarts of 30% nitro fuel. HPI sponsored a T-shirt give away and for the Grand Prize Superior Hobbies raffled off a Traxxas 2.5 T-Maxx truck won by Steve Tash of Orlando.

Thanks to all of the sponsors and racers for a terrific event. It is sure to be one to remember. We look forward to seeing everyone next month. Remember the Superior Hobbies - R/C Monster Motorsports Points Series starts Saturday August 5, 2006. Click here to pre-register for this race.
